Surfing while pregnant–how long should you go?

Published by alexota at 5:13 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I am five months pregnant with my second child, and although I only surfed a handful of times during my first pregnancy, I’ve been going non-stop during this one. I guess you’re more lax about a lot of things second time around, going surfing included. This summer, one of my good friends, who is due a few days before me, and I have arranged babysitters so we can hit the water every Thursday morning. This morning, as I was putting my wetsuit on, I noticed it fit much tighter than last week, and then as we paddled out, I kept thinking that it was a good thing we were longboarding so I could get to my knees to paddle–I couldn’t believe how much more uncomfortable I was! So, we’re out there talking, wondering how much longer we can keep our Thursday surf sessions going when we see another preggie. As she paddled by us, we start talking and find out that she’s due the same week we are, and thinks she has a few more weeks in the water before her board goes into storage. But, other than being uncomfortable, how long should you go? Your stomach protrudes out more, making you think you’re more prone to injury (your board hitting you), but is it really that much more unsafe than surfing at three months was? All you moms out there–did you surf when you were pregnant? Why, or why not?

You’re lucky, I’m still in a springsuit, but it’s my same one, it stretches to fit my tummy. I fell hard on the water (belly flop) which made me second guess myself, but other than that, I think if you avoid flying boards to your stomach, you should be okay. Once we get too big to lie down, my friend and I are going to try Stand-Up Surfing to see how that is.

I am five months pregnant with my second child and still surfing as much as possible. With my first child I surfed until I was 30 weeks pregnant. If the waves are out of my comfort zone or if it is too crowded I chose those days to sit out. I think you can surf as long as you feel comfortable when you are pregnant. I think it is great way to keep in shape while pregnant and keeps me happy. But, I also believe you have to be very careful. I keep reminding myself being pregnant is only temporary and the waves aren’t going anywhere.

I am 30 weeks with my first baby and am still surfing, no worries. People say I am carrying small but I feel huge! Unfortunatley it is winter here so my full suit is getting a little tight which is the most restricting part when trying to stand up. If it is a nice day I will try to wear just a top and bikini (it is australia after all, the air is usually colder than the water - even in winter on the gold coast!) and it’s much better. I have only been going out when it is 3 foot or less and am riding a longboard but still paddling on my belly (which I am sure looks a little strange). I will keep going as long as possible. I personally think that the little fella can take a fair bit of squashing and is very protected in there so ‘go for it!’ Besides I want to get in as many surfs with my husband as possible before D-day.
